Phototherapy
Phototherapy is defined by NAALT as the use of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation predominantly within the red and infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum to assist in healing and pain relief. Phototherapy can either stimulate or inhibit cell activity.
Other names for phototherapy are 'photobiomodulation' and 'photon therapy'.
This broadly descriptive term encompasses, but is not limited to, the following categories of electromagnetic radiation:
- low level laser therapy
- light emitting diode therapy
- broadband radiation
- photodynamic therapy
- polarized light therapy
